Heart of Mist is nothing short of a WOW read. It’s big, it’s epic, it’s dark . . . and it took my breath away! Helen Scheuerer doesn’t pull any punches, plunging us immediately headlong into her dangerous world . . . and into the POV of her lead character, Bleak.
Bleak is a totally unusual heroine in this genre. In many ways, she’s the opposite of what I look for in a lead character. She’s a drunk, she’s self-pitying, she’s depressive (some might say whiny). But man! The author took risks with this character, and in my opinion they paid off. Bleak is such a real person, and it did not take me long to find myself rooting for her. Her journey of growth and discovery is fascinating and heartbreaking by turns, and I totally loved her by the end of this volume (and can’t wait to see how her story continues!).
But Bleak isn’t the only fascinating character peopling this world. Bern is her closest friend, who is always there fore her, always believes in her, even when she can’t believe in herself. Swinton brings a dangerous edge, with his blind devotion to duty and a strong selfish streak (though we find out by the end that there’s more to him than first meets the eye). And that’s just to name a few of the fascinating perspectives we get to see as this story unfolds.
It’s a long book—longer than I usually read in this genre. And let me tell you, I loved sinking deeply into this world and into Helen Scheuerer’s beautiful prose. I enjoyed the experience so much, I have to officially name this book my Favorite Read of 2019 . . . So Far.
Seriously, if that’s not enough to get you to try it, I just don’t know if I can help you!
I’m already deep into Book 2, and I can safely say the story is only getting deeper and more fascinating as we progress. Can’t wait to see how it all resolves in War of Mist (releasing at the end of this month).
