A BOND OF VENOM AND MAGIC by Karen Tomlinson - Review

May 31, 2019

My rating: 4.5 of 5 Stars

Publication Date: October 2016

Publisher: Karen Tomlinson

Genre: YA Fantasy Adventure

Book 1 in the Goddess and the Guardian series opens with explosive action that glues you to the page . . . and then keeps you turning page after page after page as a rich and beautiful fantasy world opens up before your eyes. I was totally hooked and am so glad to have discovered Karen Tomlinson’s work!

The best part about this book was the characters, particularly the two leads. Diamond, the heroine, is an unusual leading lady for this genre. She doesn’t start out as powerful and confident as you normally see. She suffers from panic-attacks and is a bit naïve at times. But these struggles only serve to make her journey of growth and strength all the more compelling. I really loved walking in her shoes as she discovers the truth of her heritage and struggles to figure out who to trust in a dangerous world.

Hugo, the hero, was a total heartthrob. He spends much of the story trying to fight his attraction to Diamond, and you know I totally live for angst like that!!! :) The chemistry between them was great and added much to my enjoyment of the tale being told.

Together they face the wrath of the Wraith Lord, who seeks unleash darkness and chaos upon the realms. Monsters and magic abound, and some of the action sequences were truly terrifying. I enjoyed every moment and can’t wait to see what happens next!
