This one was HUGELY hyped, at least in my readerly circles. It seems as though everyone was (and still is, honestly) talking about it, so even though I don't normally gravitate to fae stories, I finally had to, just to satisfy my curiosity.

And I'm glad I did!

I think Holly Black must be some kind of a genius. I don't ordinarily enjoy stories where the main characters aren't even likeable. Seriously, Jude is about as cuddly as a cactus, and Prince Cardan? Um, yeah. This book isn't called The CRUEL Prince for nothing (though maybe there's more to him than first meets the eye? Maybe? Maybe not . . .).

But inexplicably, I found myself actually caring about all of these characters. It's not like Jude transformed into a more likable person along the way. If anything she gets more vicious, more brutal, more bloodthirsty. But . . . I kind of had to understand her, the more I saw of her world and her upbringing. She's not someone I can like, but she's definitely someone I can care for. And her story is nothing if not compelling!

Everything about this book was beautifully crafted. The prose was pitch-perfect, absolutely suited to the first-person narrator. The world-building was elaborate but never confusing. The plotting was enthralling! I read the last third in a huge rush of frantic page-turning then cursed myself for not having waited until closer to book 2's release before picking up this story!

January can't come soon enough . . . .
