After struggling and struggling to make it through this book, I realized that I was actually avoiding sitting down to read. Since reading is my LIFE, this was a big problem. Thus I decided to set this book aside as a DNF until further notice.

I don't feel like I can offer a full review since I didn't actually make it through this one. But I'll make a few comments as to why this one was such a bad fit for me as a reader.

Ultimately, it all came down to the heroine. Alina was just unbearably judgemental and mean-spirited. Yet this wasn't presented as a fault that she needed to grow through. In fact, I got the strong impression that I was simply supposed to bond to this character and root for her through all her ups and downs. She didn't see any need to grow, and the Handsome Hero (who was utterly forgettable in every way) adores her without any perceivable reason.

Plus . . . she squeals and bites her lip over and over again. Two of my biggest literary pet peeves.

I can tell this author is tremendously talented and has a real way with words. And her action sequences were tense and exciting, real fun to read. But this story was so bogged down by its unlikable heroine, I had to force myself to read to the 50% mark.

Part of me wonders if I would have liked it more if I hadn't just recently read and loved The Midnight Sea by Kat Ross and Sunbolt by Intisar Khanani. Both of those were similar ideas, but both were so much more interesting, with distinct and engaging heroines, and plots that kept me gripped to the pages (in very different ways!).

Shadow and Bone might be a book you would love. Everyone looks for different things in a great read. So don't let my reactions influence you too strongly. But this definitely wasn't the read for me.
